Child Development
Development of children in the Quiché region
This program is in the mountainous region Ixil, central Guatemala. FH is present in 11 communities around Nebaj, Ixil.
These communities are among the poorest in the country. This region has been severely affected by civil war and the rate of orphans and widows is high. The illiteracy rate is also one of the highest in the country.
The overall objective is to support communities and children in particular to reach their full potential for development. In the program supported by fhsuisse, we are helping the children of poor families to follow their schooling under good conditions. In conjunction with local churches, children enjoy recreational and sporting activities. Families are helped in practical ways by improvements on their houses, training in health, agriculture and income-generating activities.
What we are doing:
* Supporting the schooling of children by providing scholastic materials.
* Children who are in need of medical care are transferred to the hospital and supported.
* Children and parents are educated on health topics such as AIDS, latrines, or how to grow vegetables for a balanced diet.
* Counsellors visit families, helping to improve the medical and social levels. The visits are conducted in collaboration with the heads of churches which parents are members.
* We built a playing and sports field where children are involved in extra-curricular activities with facilitators.
