Agricultural development in Alta Verapaz
This program is in the region of San Cristobal in a valley in central Guatemala. FH is working with the Pokomchi communities, which are among the poorest in the country.
These communities have also been very affected by the civil war which ended in 1996. The illiteracy rate is among the highest in the country.
The overall objective is to support communities in sustainable development to enable them to have better conditions after the departure of NGOs. The support programmes for families are made through leaders of churches and communities. They include emphases on health, hygiene and agriculture.
In agriculture, we train families to increase production, to diversify crops for good nutrition and revenue management for improved living conditions.
What we are doing:
* Training to increase agricultural production. Production and use of organic fertilizers. Production and use of biological insecticides. Creation of terraces in the slopes.
* Support for marketing and sales of agricultural products
* Training to diversify production for better nutrition
* Training for diversification of income-generating activities
* Income management training for improved living conditions.
* Training of agricultural promoters as to how to construct demonstration fields.
