Food security in Burundi
Following years of civil war, poverty has increased dramatically in Burundi and today an estimated 68% of the population is on the threshold of food supply insecurity.
Agricultural production has been decreasing since 1988. For many cultures, harvested quantities could be doubled thanks to some measures of agricultural intensification. Since 1993 the war has made access to cultivable land difficult and lack of inputs has reduced agricultural production. After working with leaders, associations and local authorities, the following program of food security has been defined:
* Increasing agricultural production by the multiplication of improved seeds and the linkage of agriculture and raising livestock.
* Improving soil fertility through use of organic fertilizers and agroforestry.
* Strengthening the capacities of producers through training and agricultural consulting.
